Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
4 days / 3 nights (T04PA4)
This hike to Machu Picchu follows the ancient route used by the Incas. We come upon plenty of Inca ruins along the way, enjoying the diversity of flora and the fauna from the region and passing through beautiful mountain scenery and lush green rain forest.
[Day 1]: Wayllabamba - We pick up you at 6:00 am to transfer from the hotel to km 82 by bus. Then we walk for around 7 hours (12 km) to reach the first campsite (2870 m, 9557ft) and we see the Patallacta Inca site.
[Day 2]: Pacaymayo - Now the trail ascends steeply (9km) until the first pass, Warmiwañusca (4200 m. / 13,986 ft). Here we have a breathtaking view of Mt. Huayanay. We will also cross an area of cloud forest, which is the habitat for many different Kinds of birds. Immediately after the pass, we will descend for about 2 hours to Pacaymayo valley (3650 m. / 12,155 ft), where we camp.
[Day 3]: Winaywayna - The most impressive day, and the longest. We will see several archaeological sites. We climb to the second pass and we see the archeological site of Runkurakay. After going over the pass (3970 m) we will descend to Sayamarca (3624 m) to arrive at Phuyupatamarca (3650 m). Along this climb we can appreciate the magnitude of the Incas' ancient craft. Then we descend by many stone steps to Wiñaywayna (2670m, 8825ft). At this campsite we will find a lodge with a restaurant, bar and bathrooms with hot showers (woohoo!).
[Day 4]: Machu Picchu - We will leave around 5:30 am. In One hour and a gentle climb later we meet Intipunku, (The Sun Gate). From this fabulous spot we will see the sunrise over the sacred citadel of Machupicchu. Continuing we descend into Machu Picchu (30 mins). We will have a guided tour and after you will have free time to walk around, or you can visit the Temple of the Moon, the fabulous Inca bridge, climb the Huayna Picchu mountain, etc. We will meet in Aguas Calientes where, if you like, you can visit and relax in the thermal baths. In the afternoon we travel back to Cusco by train (4 hrs).
