CUSCO, MACHU PICCHU, PUNO, COLCA CANYON
16 days / 15 nights (P16PA8)
On this expedition you will visit Machu Picchu and Cusco, Lake Titicaca in Puno and the Colca canyon in Arequipa. You will have the opportunity to stay with local people on the islands of Lake Titicaca and trek in Colca canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.
[Day 1]: Arrive in Lima - Check in to your hotel.
[Day 2]: Fly to Cusco - We will meet you in the airport and transfer you to the hotel. After lunch you will have a walking tour in Cusco visiting the important sites and observing some handicraft workshops.
[Day 3]: City Tour - After breakfast we will walk approximately 25 minutes towards Saqsaywaman, then continue by horseback to Tambomachay, Pucapucara, Temple of the Moon and Qenqo. In the afternoon we will return to Cusco by bus. A box lunch will be provided.
[Day 4]: Machu Picchu - We will leave early in the morning for a 4 hour train ride to Machu Picchu. You
will have a 2 hour guided tour and after that free time to explore the Lost
Citadel of the Incas. We will return to Cusco by train to arrive at night and
transfer you back to your hotel.
[Day 5]: Sacred Valley - We will drive 30 minutes To Pisac to visit an archeological site and the local traditional market, and travel along the valley to the ancient Inca city of Ollantaytamg. We will then go to Chinchero and continue on to arrive back in Cusco around 6:30 pm.
[Day 6]: Exploring Cusco - Today you are free to relax and explore on your own. Travelers can go on a city
tour of the churches and surrounding ruins, wander through Cusco's busy center,
shop in local markets or just people watch in the Plaza de Armas. For those
bursting with energy, horseback riding, mountain biking, or even whitewater
rafting (Class III-IV) can be arranged. The night is yours to take in some of
Cusco's varied and exciting nightlife.
[Days 7]: Cusco - Puno - We will travel by bus for approximately 6 hours to Puno. We will have an English
speaking guide who will explain the places of interest that we stop and visit
along the route. Along the way you will see herds of llamas and alpaca and local
farmers in traditional dress. A buffet lunch will be provided. We will arrive
back to Puno at approximately 5:00 pm and transfer you back to your hotel.
[Days 8-9]: Lake Titicaca - We will have breakfast then board a boat that will take you to Uros. These are known as the "floating islands" because they are made with "totora" reed by local inhabitants. We will then continue by boat to Amantani island. The community will welcome you and you will be staying at the home of a local family. You will experience native people in typical costumes at the marketplace where you can buy artistic gifts and souvenirs like hats, gloves, vests etc. If you desire you will be able to swim in the lake. We return to Puno around 5:00 pm.
[Day 10]: Puno Tour - We will travel to the archaeological sites of Sillustany, a sacred cemetery of the Incas with tombs as big as towers, magnificently constructed with huge rocks and close to nice Humayu lagoons. Later we will travel to the town of Chucuito with an Inca fertility temple.
[Day 11]: Journey to Arequipa - After mid day we will travel by bus for about 6 hours to Arequipa.
[Day 12]: Arequipa Tour - At 9 am. we will begin to visit the main sites such as the Cathedral, Santa Catalina Convent, La Compania cloisters and San Francisco Plaza. You will observe very unique architecture. Most of the buildings were done with "sillar" rock (a white volcanic rock). In the afternoon we travel to Colca Valley by bus. You will spend the night in a hotel in Cabanaconde.
[Day 13]: Colca Canyon - Leaving the town of Cabanaconde we descend 1000 meters (3300 feet) to the bottom of one of the deepest canyons in the world. We will then cross the Cola River to visit the other side of the canyon and enjoy the amazing scenery, and set up camp for the night.
[Day 14]: Return to Arequipa - We will take a hike for approximately 3 hours from the bottom of the canyon back to Cabanaconde. When we arrive, we will transfer by bus back to Arequipa arriving around 6:30 pm.
[Day 15]: Fly to Lima - We will transfer you to the airport in the morning for your flight to Lima.
[Day 16]: Return to Airport - Fly home from Lima.

Flights (Lima - Cuscco, Arequipa - Lima) are not included. Please allow $75 for each flight (flight cost subject to change) plus $28 international departure tax and $10 local departure taxes. |
