CUSCO, SACRED VALEY, INCA TRAIL, PUNO, JUNGLE
16 days / 15 nights (P15PA7)
This is our best trip combination! It combines an Inca Trail trek to the
mystical city of Machu Picchu with 3 nights in the Amazon jungle. It will also
include a tour on the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca. This
adventure combines three great regions of Peru giving you a panoramic view of
this Andean country. Trek through the Andes along the Inca Trail, explore the
Amazon jungle and the native communities in the floating islands of Amantany
and Taquile. Experience Peru's colorful markets and fascinating past and
present cultures.
[Day 1]: Arrive in Lima - Check in to your hotel.
[Day 2]: Fly to Cusco - We will meet you when you arrive at the airport
and transfer you to your hotel in the core of the old Inca Empire (3,345 m.
/11,150 ft.). You will have the morning free to do as you wish. In the
afternoon we will tour the city, visiting the Sun Temple. We will go to the
nearby archeological sites of Saqsaywaman, Quenqo and Tambomachay. We will
return to the hotel in Cusco at approximately 6:30 pm.
[Day 3]: Sacred Valley - We will depart at approximately 9:00 am by bus
to the sacred Valley. This tour includes a visit to explore the archeological
site and colorful market in the city of Pisaq. We will then travel along the
valley to the ancient Inca city of Ollantaytambo and visit the Inca fortress.
We will spend the night in the Sacred Valley.
[Day 4-7]: Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - We will begin close to the
Sacred river, Willcamayu, walking in the footsteps of the great Inca
civilization along the Inca Trail to the sacred city of Machu Picchu. You will
be well cared for by our friendly staff of guides and porters. Each day we will
pass by beautiful Inca cities. The scenery changes from snow-capped mountains
to lush clouded green forest. On the last day we wake early for a short walk to
the Sun Gate to watch the sunrise over magnificent Machu Picchu. Like the Incas
that once journeyed to the sacred city, we too are pilgrims on this inspiring
exploration of this sacred city, Machu Picchu. At the end of the tour we will
board a bus to Aguas Calientes village where you will have the opportunity to
take a bath in the natural, medicinal hot springs. Later in the afternoon we
travel by train to Cusco. "SEE OUR 4 DAY INCA TRAIL TREK PROGRAM"
[Day 8]: Exploring Cusco - Today you are free to relax and explore on
your own. Travelers can go on a city tour of the churches and surrounding
ruins, wander through Cusco's busy center, shop in local markets or just people
watch in the Plaza de Armas. For those bursting with energy, horseback riding,
mountain biking, or even whitewater rafting (Class III-IV) can be arranged. The
night is yours to take in some of Cusco's varied and exciting nightlife.
[Day 9]: Cusco - Puno - We will travel by bus for approximately 9 hours
to Puno. This is a spectacular ride - it crosses the 14,403 feet La Raya Pass.
Try to grab a window seat and enjoy Peru's highland. On the way we will stop to
explore a small Inca site and walk among a herd of llamas and alpacas.
[Days 10-11]: Lake Titicaca - In the morning a canoe will take us from
the shores of the mystical Lake Titicaca. Legend has it that the first Incas
rose out of its azure waters. We visit the floating islands of the Uros people
and stop for the night on Amantany Island. Here we will split into small groups
and overnight with local families. We will share in the hospitality of the
native Quechuas and experience a short day in their lives. The second day after
enjoying breakfast with our host families, we will make our way back to Puno,
arriving at approximately 4:00 pm.
[Days 12-14]: Amazon Jungle - In the morning we will transfer to
Juliaca's airport for a short flight from the Andes into the lowlands of the
Amazon jungle to Puerto Maldonado. We will then travel by motorized canoe to
our lodge in Tambopata. This area holds the word record for the most bird
sightings. After exploring the jungle and some intense wildlife observation we
will return to Puerto Maldonado. We will then transfer to the local airport for
the flight to Lima.
